Drama festival begins at Natmandal

January 9, 2010

The post-graduate students of theatre department of Dhaka University staged Nobel Laureate English playwright Harold Pinter’s “The Homecoming” on Wednesday evening at Natmondol auditorium.
‘The Homecoming’ translated by Professor Abdus Salim and directed by Ziaul Haque Titas will be staged every evening at the venue till January 11.
Pinter’s “Homecoming” involves a six-member working class family in North London. Teddy, the eldest son of the family, is a professor, who teaches philosophy at an American university. The plot focuses on Teddy’s homecoming along with his wife Ruth, a mother of three, who grew up in the same neighbourhood before leaving for America with Teddy.
Romance, nostalgia, lust and perversity unfold as the couple settles down in the family home.
Ruth teases Teddy’s brothers — Lenny, who appears to be a pimp, and Joey, a wannabe boxer — and their father Max, a retired butcher in his 70s. The family members taunt one another in an incestuous game of one-upmanship. Meanwhile the sixth member of the family Sam, Max’s brother, calmly observes everything.
As the play begins, through a dream sequence it’s revealed that Lenny desires Ruth. Max’s working class background is evident through his constant swearing and cursing. Lenny and Joey share their stories of lust at ease with their father in front of other family members.
Ruth decides to stay with her in-laws and Teddy returns home to America without her.
The performers include Razib Chandra Das, Shahman Moishan, Rabbi Ibne Siddique, Abdul Quayum Bhyan, Belayat Hossain, Eanmul Haque Tutul, Sharmin Aktar Lima, Mahfuza Khan Asha and Nushrat Zahan Keya.
